I usually don't...
...do what I'm about to do because I like to be like Johnny Carson in that you don't know what my particulay persuasion is but you do hear my opinions on specific subjects. I've gone out of my way to avoid the war in Iraq because I didn't want to offend anyone in THAT way, especially with our men and women currently overseas and in constant peril. I doubt that my little opinion would get in the way so I've decided to go ahead and post this. A friend of mine asked me to ask you all if you could name one thing that is better under Bush than before him. I'm going to post part of his email and then what I had to say to him:
Glad you might have a trip to the coast! You need some fun! And, thanks for posting my clarification that GA does not solve more murders than NJ. I wish you would ask your readers to name one thing that is better under Bush.
First of all, I DO need some fun! I AM going to have some fun and there's not a thing that can stop me. I've been going out of my mind having one huge problem or another and it's pretty much been going on since the holidays. I have to get back into a certain mind set and I can't do it very well. I need to go away and stop worrying, at least for a few days, about all the bullshit that's been going on in my life. The stupid electricity going off didn't even bother me because so much stupid shit is happening that the power getting turned off is relatively benign. At least I'm not in jail.
Anyway, after I thought about it for a few minutes, I started to get rather annoyed with the war and decided to post this part of my friends email and part of my answer to it:
Remember, the last State Of The Union speech in which Bush called for a halt to "man-animal hybrids" (... WTF)? And remember today is "Mission Accomplished Day"! Three years ago today Bush proclaimed "Mission Accomplished!" I am not sure what he meant by "Mission Accomplished" other than he was happy about starting an expensive war that was going to kill and maim a lot of people. Here is what we got as Mission Accomplished.-
Then, he posted a graph of the war dead and injured and so on but I couldn't get it to post up here. Of course, I don't really need to, we all know that young people are dying over there. There has been a reason that I don't touch on the war very much. I really don't want to be THAT controversial. I don't have children over there but some people do so out of respect for them, I usually shut up. It is absolutely possible that someone reading this has a loved one who's life is currently in the balance so I didn't want to run the risk of offending them. But I will say the following because I think that it keeps within my parameters so far as not mentioning my political persuasion but still giving my opinion.
Hopefully, I've done it in a way that won't offend a mother who might be reading this right now in an attempt to take her mind off of her son or daughter.
You know, the thing that I'm afraid of is the same reason that I don't actually let my side of the aisle to be known. I absolutely think that Bush is a nut and rather dim witted at that. I also believe that this war is hideous, call it was it is or get the hell out of there. If we're there for oil, say so and lets see some oil. I don't care so much about the Iraqui's as I do the Americans. I actually think that they should be left alone and if they're killing each other, to hell with them as long as Americans don't have to die. It's awful that no one in the government has the balls to say the truth. I don't get it. Everyone knows that they're lying, but no one asks any questions. I was just as angry at Clinton. That's where I usually part minds with...They couldn't see that Clinton was just as bad as any other elected official. I do have a problem with Hillary in that she has done absoutely nothing and what she does say, she won't do so without sticking her thumb up in the air. I would have respect for anyone that told the truth, whatever that truth may be. But the same sack of lies are getting on my nerves, no matter WHO tells the lies. You know what? I'm going to post this now, along with your question, now I've gotten it all on my mind and it's pissing me off. Damn it.
OK, that part all came out of the email. I don't believe that the war is being fought for the same reasons that we said we would fight it. I believe that intelligent minds can differ and I give total respect for all, no matter how much I may disagree with them. To answer another question that this friend asked me, I WOULD tell one of my kids to join the military, if that's what they wanted to do. There was a time when I wanted to go into the Army but my father talked me out of it. My biggest regret in life is that I didn't do what I wanted to do then. So, if one of my children wanted to go into the service, I would support them as much as I did when they went to college.
That's pretty much the point. The people who have joined the military wanted to do so. I respect that and congratulate them all for having the courage of their convictions. They are there because that's where they want to be. So, I can't necessarily get as upset as I did over the Viet Nam war. That was dreadful, it truly was.
But, that all being what it is, I still can't come up with any reason that I would feel would be worth the lives of my children. It's not like WWII, where we had been attacked and our way of life was literally hanging in the balance. This is a war that I don't understand anymore. I would understand it if we got anything out of it, like oil. Oil absolutely DOES have everything to do with our way of life. But, we aren't getting any oil out of it. To the contrary, it costs more than it ever did. So, something is wrong with this picture. I don't know what it is, but I know that I don't see anything worth the lives of so many young Americans. Saddam is out of there, we shouldn't be in the business of nation building. That's what the UN is for. We should let them do their job or dismantle them.
The UN is totally useless now but that's because we have made them useless. If we aren't going to listen to the UN without manipulating what they demand, we should just get rid of them and stop the charade. It would make more sense to just give them the money and let them do what they want to do. At least that way our kids wouldn't be dying and no one could question an American president or his reasons.
I'm curious about something, why don't we ever hear about NATO anymore? What happened to it? Do we hold true to any alliances? Are we just doing what we want to do? Why can't we let a part of this planet rule itself, even if it's in a way that we disagree with? Why are we the arbitrators of human rights? Who put us in charge of the planet?
The rest of the planet seems to be getting annoyed with us. We don't have that many friends right now. Oh well, that's about it for now. I could keep on going but I have to go to the bathroom and you probably do too. That's what I think about the war.
