Hi. I'm trying to think of another description to put here. Any ideas? I'll try again at 420.

You know...

...the more I think about it, the more dangerous this Imus situation appears. The people who are bitching at him the loudest won't stop until all of the public airwaves are full of tele-tubby type programming, pretty pictures and pleasant sounds.

We ARE at 451 and no one seems to realize that. Yikes. I can't believe that this is the same country that created All in the Family. I don't know what's happening here but it's absolutely going in the wrong direction in the names of racism, feminism, anti-semite-ism...all of the isms threaten our right to speak freely for fear of letting some stupid comment pass our lips. It doesn't make us racist and even if we ARE racist, this is America where we have the right to be racists. I grew up in the Chicago suburbs when the Nazi's marched in Skokie, Illionois. If we had to put up with that nutty group, surely we can deal with a jack ass here or there without creating an international incident.

Apparently, I made a racist comment once on this blog and didn't even notice it. I referred to someone as "Oriental"...not knowing it was now considered racist. I didn't get the manual with the new vernacular. Oriental simply means East. American's happen to be Occidental...West. That's not a racist slur...it's a fricking word. I don't know what the hell is going on here.

Lara, I remember when black people were referred to as "colored" and they decided to change it because, "We aren't colored...WE'RE BLACK!!!" They pumped their fists up in the air and shouted "Black Power!" Now "black" is out and African American is in. I wonder what it'll be next?

Well "that's politics" would be the common response. But if I was authoring a thesaurus I'd have "bullshit" as the first synonym for "politics".

The hypocrisy and righteous indignation at an old white guy using "ho" when all the hip hop rap stars get a pass on "ho" "bitch" "trunk". Not just calling names, but many crude degrading suggestions. Any hip hop rap video could be misconstrued as soft porn.

If these self-proclaimed African American leaders gave two shits about their people they'd have something to say to these "artists" a long time ago. Who does more damage? I remember the early days of rap before all the sexist degradation. They could express their unique culture without degrading women. AND THEY SHOULD.

I guess the African American's have finally arrived, their leaders do them as much injustice as our white leaders.

What all people of all races should do is demand their leaders represent THEIR interests rather than special interests.

This is one thing we could all unite on, for we all are equally misrepresented.

Excellent, JQ. The shame of it is that so many believe that Sharpton and his ilk ARE doing them some good. It's sickening. They take advantage of the trust that others put in them.

Meg, JQ -

I was just thinking the other day....I have a friend who is rather racist, but says when he is called a racist that he's not, he's a realist.

I have pointed out to him that the behavior that he despises - the very public image that is almost a caricature of the black male - is not representative of all black males. In fact, that kind of behavior - gangs, violence in general, violence towards women - exists whenever poverty exists. If you can't get out of poverty, you grasp at anything that makes you different than your fellow folks.

Also, was thinking about rap and why white men (except Eminem) can't rap. White men can't rap...what would they rap about...having their volvo repossessed? Being audited by the IRS? But rap came to be (much like jazz and blues) because it is one of a few distinct black art forms, and a unique tool that I believe began as a way to express frustration with the views society held.

Just my two cents.

Eliza,

You're absolutely right...it's economic differences that set us apart. Rich folk seem to get along with other rich folk just fine. I think they WANT us to be distracted and focus on race. They wouldn't make it such a big deal while the real problem is the economically challenged.

Eliza,

Poor or Cultural Art form is fine. But abusive is abuse. Black man raping about abusing women or black women isn't a requirement of poor or cultural art.

Do poor whites (yeah they exist) sing about hos?

If it is economic, what does sex and gender bashing have to do with it. Seems like Jazz, blues, historical cultural art, had plenty of economic topics.

I don't consider cop (pig) killing lyrics to be proper cultural art either.

Famous Amos, was one of the few African American's I heard speak up about cleaning up rap music.

Oh, and for white rapping, Debra Harry of Blondie couldn't be whiter and I think her "rap" predated most. MC Hammer found a way to rap without putting anyone down.

It is possible.
