Good morning!
This is part of a comment that I received regarding Shillings on the Square and their "accounting practices":
I went and asked hubby, who grew up in a restaurant since his family owned them before he was even born. And he's owned them for at least 20 years on his own. I showed him the check images and had him read about it and after the expected, "Get the fuck out of here! Is this a joke?", he said, "They are fucking the employees. I have never given a check for $0 and honestly think that having your taxes equal your income would be as frequent an occurrence as winning the lottery. It's not going to happen." So, while we are not really claiming to know all about restaurant payroll...it seems pretty clear to us that this is totally and completely bogus. Bravo for blowing the whistle on this guy! Scumbags like that don't deserve their business license.
Thank you but I think the credit goes to the employees who trusted me, a person they didn't know, to check this all out. Reardon fires people nilly willy and tells them, "There are 100 people who want your job so if you don't like it, you can leave."
Does anyone want to send Reardon a copy of How to Win Friends and Influence People? I would but I don't want to spend a dime on Reardon nor do I want to ever spend another dime in his restaurant.
That comment included something that I had said, "The chances of winning the lottery are better than the chances of these checks coming out with a zero at the end." And sadly, this is not a joke. But on the positive side, all of the employees actually had MONEY on their paychecks this past week. That did make me feel good...but I just hope that none of the servers who trusted me get found out. They'd lose their jobs in a heartbeat. That's why the only checks that I could expose were the ones that belonged to people who had already been fired.
I have so many others that look exactly like the one that I posted, different numbers, but same amazing accounting equalling a zero paycheck. I worked as a server while I was in college and never, not ONCE did I ever get a zero paycheck. Also, I was ALWAYS taxed on 8% of my total sales. No one ever taxes servers at 20%. Reardon admitted that the only tips he could prove were the credit card charges and I have the paperwork that says the employees were tipped at anything from 14% to 17%. So, even if he WANTED to charge the servers 20%, he has no paperwork to prove the cash tips nor has he even asked the servers what their cash tips were. I don't know why he started doing this but his general attitude towards the employees suggests that it wasn't because he wanted to be sure he was being honest.
Anyway, that little scam has pretty much been exposed so I hope that the servers end up with their money from now on. But let me just say this, if I were hungry and on the Square, I'd starve before I went to Shillings. And if anyone out there DOES go to Shillings, tip your servers in cash.
OK, my sister just called for her daily ride to work. I'll be right back.
